P3 riders,

Thank you for doing this. I lost my left eye to cancer at the age of 18 months and my son who was born on April 1 of 2009 was diagnosed with cancer in his left eye at 2 weeks of age. In Oct of 09, the cancer moved into the right eye. There are 6 tumors in the left & 3 in the right. Through multiple surgeries and various treatments, it looks like he will have 20/80 vision in his left eye and still 20/20 in his right. Thank you for raising awareness and continuing this ongoing fight against cancer. Safe riding to all!

Hello everyone, thanks for the chance to be a warrior. I have been in contact with Laurens and hope to meet all you guys soon. My transplant and new birthday was May 19th after receiving my stem cells back. I continue to see my Dr. here in Anderson weekly until my first checkup back in Houston in November. My platelet numbers and white count remain low, but my red count is up. I am battling NHL with a low grade follicular lymphoma possibly being there for the rest of my life. I am blessed and fortunate to be a part of this fundraiser. I was a bike officer a few years ago and know how tuff long rides in the saddle can be. Thanks again !!! Allen

My emotions are again beginning to peak. In just one week I will make my third trip with the Challenge to Conquer Cancer team. The first was as support for my four “queens” and last year as a rider.

I’m sure there isn’t a cyclist in the Greenville area that does not know that I’m 71 years old and passionate about our cause. I may not be the fastest rider but I would challeneg anyone to equal my dedicatio and passion for our cause.

Thus far, my immediate family and I have been spared from this dreaded disease. This is why I thank God for the grace and strength that will enable me to actively participate and ridein this 1500 mile bicycle relay.

I ride in honor of and in memory over 50 relatives, classmates, neighbors and friends who have been stricken by cancer. I have a special commemorative shirt made honoring and memorializing them and also carry a tag on my bike reflecting their names. The real tragedy is that every year, honorees have to be memorialized and new names added to my honoree list.

Nevertheless all of us continue to hope that our efforts will someday lead to the eradication of this dreaded disease.

I also ride to honor my C3 cancer surviving teammates. They are truly an inspiration to us all. It’s been a personal pleasure to make their acquaintance and call them “teammates”.

I know we’ll be riding with many of you firmly behind us and wishing us a safe and trouble-free journey. Thank you for your thpoughts and prayers.

Let me again remind all of the C3 newcomers, “It’s not about the ride the speed or the distance you travel. It is about the cause, our purpose our passion and dedication to those we honor and memorialize.” Godspeed to everyone.

Joe

As one of this year’s cancer warriors, I am humbled and honored by the team’s commitment and strength in taking on this challenge. I was diagnosed with urethelial cancer just over a year ago and have undergone chemo, major surgery and more chemo since then. There are many others out there who have not survived as long as I have and for those, we all participate at whatever level we can.

Cancer is NOT our friend, but we learn to deal with it however we can. It is with the prayers, support and efforts of people like you that help us do that. Hopefully, God provides the refuge and strength we need to get through this battle, but without our friends riding the mountains and hills between these two beautiful cities, life would be harder.

Hi Team!
Just a note as you prepare mentally and physically for this journey. May you all get some much needed rest! I send my prayers for a safe ride. I send my memories of my parents that this beast took from me. I send more prayers for the friends and family that are going through their own journey with the beast. I send all of the love and good wishes that I can think of to all of you for your efforts in finding a cure for this most terrible disease. I would like to share one of my most favorite sayings :

“Listen to your life. See if for the fathomless mystery that it is. In the boredom and pain of it no less than the excitement and gladness: touch, taste, smell, your way to the holy and hidden heart of it because in the last analysis all moments are key moments and life itself is grace” ~ Frederick Buechner

Godspeed!

I miss going with you all this year. All of the participants last year were a real inspiration to me. I was deeply touched by the cancer stories I heard and the dedication that every participant had in the fight against cancer. I plan to be at the send off Sunday and look forward to seeing everyone again.

I have TWO questions. Why are nearly all the updates from the women on the teams? Let’s hear a shout out from those guys. Also, which team / shift is Mr. Harry B. on? C’mon man, you gotta give us some news back home. We’ll be on the trails this week turning up a few cold ones afterwards talking about you so give us something to say or we’ll make it up!
Hope y’all enjoyed the route through the mountains. It’s just about peaking color in North Georgia this past weekend, so I figured you’re getting some nice views too.
Take care and stay on it!

If there was a scientific meter that could measure the Power Output that the P3C3 is generating right now in the fight against cancer, that meter would be OFF THE CHART! Thanks to each every one of you for your efforts and dedication. If you could include my family members currently being treated for cancer, Jan, David, Bob, and Chris Page, in your prayers, I would be most grateful. I am in the Shenandoah Valley and it gets cold here at night so I suspect that you are facing the same thing. I admire all of you for what you are doing. You have worked so hard to raise a significant amount of money plus you work so hard to get to Austin. I see the moon out tonight and I hope it guides your way. Of course their may be a second moon out. I hope you see a lot of wild animals on that beautiful part of the Trace. Won’t it be great when you finally get to ride in the daylight! I’m so proud of each and every one of you and am very thankful you’ve welcomed this diva who doesn’t even ride a bike into the P3C3 family.
Here are the words to the blessing I sang for you yesterday–
May the road rise to meet you,
May the wind be at your back,
May the sun shine warm upon your face.
May the rain fall soft upon your fields…
And until we meet again,
May God hold you in the palm of his hand.

Keep these words in your hearts and minds as you RideSTRONG!
We’ve got things covered at home–keep the pics and posts coming so we can experience a little of the EPIC adventures you are having. Be safe and know that you are making a difference!

Our life’s journey of self-discovery is not a straight-line rise from one level of consciousness to another. Instead, it is a series of steep climbs and flat plateaus, then further climbs. Even though we all approach the journey from different directions, certain of the journey’s characteristics are common to all of us.”

Team Conquistadors – Joe told me the midnight to 6am ride was the toughest. You Made It! Congratulations!!!! Finally the light of day. Tomorrow morning you get the 6am to noon ride. Last year a lot of traffic but at least you can see. It’s all down hill from here. Milt I hope you get a chance to ride a 4th leg in Texas. Cathy how are the picture going? Please share them with me after the ride. I hope you all avoid a flat tire on the van on some back road this year and get a little more sleep tonight. Think of the fun you will have in Austin. Have a great dinner at Schultz’s Garden Friday night. I am going to miss that very emotional meeting where participants told how cancer affected their lives. Something I will always remember. I also will miss the memorable Cancer Survivor Banquet. And Joe I know you will be back next year. You are a trooper. It was special seeing Judy & Mike on Sunday. I had the opportunity to meet Judy & Ron’s mom. Very nice person.

All your friends from Oakmont East Rehab say “‘Hi” to Marty and Team ScottStrong as well as to the rest of the C3 riders Good thing I have to go to work during the day or all I would do is track the ride and check the blog! It is so inspirational, I can’t even find the words! Marty, I haven’t spent all the $ yet. I do have a new shower door in the works. Plumbing issue in the kitchen has been addressed. Sleep easy. So, who’s winning the snoring contest in your room? Love and Hugs Linda

Dear P3C3 Family,
Today the father of our closest friends, George Bobo of Spartanburg, went in to surgery to have a cancerous lobe removed from one of his lungs. Please include him in your prayers, and if you happen to have one of the magnets available, place his name on the van for extra good luck!
Thank you for the power of your prayers.

To all you P3C3 riders, you are the bomb!! I can’t pull myself away from reading your blog at my computer at work every day this week. It’s as if we readers get to experience the ride ourselves (except in a more comfortable setting). It is such a special thing you are doing, and I know it means the world to all. Know that we are thinking of you and we are laughing and getting emotional as we read your thoughts each day. Ride on teams, you are almost there!!! With much respect, Jennifer Frame

Team Conquistadors – Milt I hope you get to ride the 4th leg this year. If I remember correctly, the team that peddled into Austin did it Thursday morning. I know when you get to Austin you all will have a great time. The LiveStrong events are special. The ride from the outskirts of Austin to the downtown hotel on Friday, the team dinner Friday night, the 5K run/walk Saturday, the Cancer Survivor Banquet on Saturday and the Armstrong bicycle ride on Sunday. Joe I hope you get another picture of you riding with Lance on Sunday. And you were in the lead! Not bad for a 71 year old rider with a lot of grit. The getting up extremely early for all these events is very trying but when you get back home you can recover in a few days and have fond memories that last a lifetime.

I keep thinking this week about how, one year ago, Josh and I only really knew two folks who were going on this journey. We followed the P3C3′s every move last year and wished Bo and Nikki and all of you a safe and happy journey. As things have turned out, we have gotten to know nearly all of you and are so proud to be able to call this dedicated, inspiring, and amazing group of people our friends. We have had the pleasure of riding with so many of you over the course of the year, and have learned so much… not only have we become better cyclists, but we also feel like you guys have shown us more about becoming better people. You all are some of my favorite examples of what being human should be all about: being champions for others, AND each other, when it really counts.

We love ALL of you so much and are sending good vibes your way for a safe arrival in Austin. Looking forward to seeing with all of you and riding with you guys again when you get home!

Much love, Jess and Josh Webster

Dear Uncle Marty and P3 Team,

Bob and I hope this finds you all in good spirits — we are both so proud of what you’re doing, and the message it sends!
Just yesterday our friend Richard was diagnosed with testicular cancer, so your quest has a renewed meaning for us. That said, thanks to efforts like yours, research has advanced treatments to the point where he and many others have a fighting chance! Bob’s dad got word last week that he is officially clear of prostate cancer after radiation therapy; being a survivor of two cancers, prostate and bladder, and at the age of 78 years old, he too can truly appreciate your Challenge to Conquer Cancer!

RIDE ON!

Love,

Katie and Bob

WELL DONE and congrats. I have really enjoyed following the blogs all week.
As many of you know, I have been training to a 1/2, you may also know I have had some knee problems recently. After reading some of the stories the week, especially Laurens’ on Tuesday, it really put things into perspective, my problems are nothing. I went out for a run Tuesday night and could not stop thinking about the struggles you guys were going thru and the struggles of the warriors, like Jeni, Laurens, Rene, Sally, My cousin Jennifer, etc. These stories and thoughts of all you guys have gone thru inspired me to keep going when sometimes I wanted to stop. At the end of my run, I realized I had just completed a PB for distance….7.2 MILES! Can you believe that.
I tell this story so you guys realize the power you have to inspire people to do things they don’t think they can. THANK YOU.

Enjoy the weekend, you have earned it.

PS…
Try and keep Jeni out of trouble!

THANKS for honoring US survivors and remembering the ones lost to this horrible disease. Glad to read you are home safe and sound.
