About the Ride

“P3C3″ CHALLENGE TO CONQUER CANCER FROM THE HILLS OF HINCAPIE TO THE LAND OF LANCE

This is a cross country relay cycling ride from Greenville, SC to Austin, TX. The ride will end at the LiveSTRONG Challenge “Ride for the Roses”, the signature event of The Lance Armstrong Foundation.

The purpose of this ride is to honor and memorialize cancer survivors and cancer patients currently fighting the battle.

Each team will ride for and in honor of a “Cancer Warrior”. Warriors are individuals currently undergoing or have recently completed treatment for cancer. It is our hope that the trip will bring a great sense of “normality” to their lives. Cancer warriors will be flown to Austin to participate as much as he/she is able in the events of the LiveSTRONG Challenge.

The ride is designed for two specific purposes:

Research:

One of the many programs that P3 donations support is a program (called Target Now) focusing on clinically relevant individualized therapeutic guidance to help improve patient care and potentially enhance clinical outcomes. Tumors develop different mechanisms of resistance over time. The Target Now program looks at FDA-approved drugs and tries to find new uses for them with cancer patients – potentially revealing beneficial treatment options that were previously not considered, while concurrently identifying therapies that have not been effective. Many upstate residents have benefited from this program. In fact P3’s number one fundraiser from this past May event’s mother is alive today because of this very program.

Who the program typically assists:

Patients with highly aggressive solid tumors, who are expected to receive minimal benefit from standard of care therapies

  • Patients with limited treatment options
  • Patients that have exhausted standard-of-care therapies
  • Patients who have rare tumor types

GHS is one of the first hospitals to adopt molecular tumor testing like that offered through it’s program and was a sponsor of clinical trial data presented at the American Association of Cancer Research in 2009.

Specifically Staff Training and Patient Equipment (Oncology Rehabilitation):

P3 dollars fund a portion of the oncology rehabilitation program at GHS Cancer Center called Moving On. This program helps adults with cancer to “move on” past the challenges of their disease by decreasing fatigue, increasing strength and improving quality of life.

Moving On centers on aerobic conditioning, which has been repeatedly demonstrated as beneficial for cancer patients experiencing profound fatigue and de-conditioning. Program also involves patient counsel and classes related to:

  • Physical therapy
  • Strength training
  • Stretching
  • Lymphedema management
  • Nutritional support
  • Psychosocial counseling
  • Support groups
  • Massage therapy
  • Yoga

The 2011 Route is slightly modified to add a few miles from this 2009 route mapped on MapMyRide.com: http://www.mapmyride.com/routes/view/8012284
