I haven’t been able to log on and let y’all know what’s been happening. Lemon Bonkers first night, as you’ve read I’m sure, was adventure filled to say the least. We were very excited to get started on our first leg. My dad happens to live just a mile or two from our planned spot to transition to the Purple Power, and I had asked him to put my team up for the night. Well, he went above and beyond – as did Molly, Rene and more of my fine family. Molly drove down from Waynesville NC just to help my dad cook our dinner and prepare a casserole for our breakfast and then drove back home<gasp>THANK YOU GUYS! They not only took care of our team, they fed the Purple Power and our magnificent Support Gypsies Kelly, Lisa and Taylor. Awesome start to our trip.

Anyways, back to our leg… not far in at all, Donna reached down to grab her bottle, got entangled in her night-reflector-robe (these things were made to sleep in I think) and went flying like an eagle. tangled in a huge reflector vest and a bike. She hopped up and tried not to bleed on her SUPER COOL Dave Matthews Firedancer socks, but the knee had a mouth and that aint normal. Donna went on the bus and I rolled up to the van that had Jana in it (sorry, dark and don’t remember who else was in there) aand said into the window “They need to see Jana. Donna may need some stitches.” In some describable as a jeckyl-hyde moment, Jana became Dr. Morse sort of mixed in with Batwoman. She very seriously and intently climbed directly over people and seats and out of the van and actually flew to the Bus to help. Well maybe not flew but it was impressive. The rest of our leg included 4 category 4 climbs in a row and ended in family bliss. Love you dad.

River sounds, crickets and cool breezes in Hiawassee as we all rested our bones for today. We left my dad’s and hurried to our next transition point to ‘Take Hold The Flame” from the Polka Dots. We met them at a Church for Pocohantas. No kidding. Tennessee. My apologies to the residents of the senior citizens home there, they were having dinner and I came in to use the restroom which is right there attached to the room where they were. Cyclists eat weird stuff on rides. ’nuff said. Sorry peeps!

Donna felt great and loosened up quickly and the rest of our team felt strong so we had the golden century on our minds. Cyclists like to ride 100 miles (century) I guess to say we did it. Well, we did and we did it with grand style I think. Kudos to my team – Donna’s Garmin put us at 101 miles, 19.5mph, just shy of 4K ft of climbing. This with a four rider team, one less person to rotate to the front of our paceline and pull us across the country. We rocked it and we did it for Rene, Andrew, Brandy, Jeni, John, Davis, and I can’t even think of anyone else because it’s late and I’m getting emotional but we have so many people that we pedal and pray for. Tomorrow we will challenge ourselves emotionally and ride for all of our warriors, one by one. I’ve heard about this ride from Rene and it’s already difficult to think about it. I wanted to take a few minutes to plant a few thoughts with each of you before the upcoming journey to Austin. First, I want to thank each of you for amazing experience I have had while just entering the world of road cycling. You are an amazing group of people who have taken me in an allowed me the pleasure of getting to know you & grow as a person. While my life was touched by cancer by losing my Dad 18 years ago, I have generally been one to ignore the impact that it has on our lives (probably just so I wouldn’t have to deal with it emotionally). Being a part of this group has brought home just how much we as individuals, families & as a race are in a battle against cancer and that it has real warriors & real victims.
As each of you get prepared to start this journey on Sunday, I want to leave you with two things that hit me hard the day that Tedd, Robin, Beth & I rode 100 miles just a couple weeks ago. As most of you know, I have just started cycling this summer & even though I have done some longer rides, 100 miles was a huge goal for me. The first leg of the ride to Greenwood was great. I was feeling pretty pumped. 50 miles down and halfway home! Well, the only problem with that was the 2nd 50 miles was coming back up & against a strong headwind. I was in over my league. Up to that point, I have mainly done rides in the 30-40 mile range with a few rides in the 50-70 mile range. As my thighs were aching and I was starting to fall back feeling like I was standing still, I had this thought. “Who am I to quit this ride or challenge?” As our Cancer Warriors know & those of us who have had cancer close to us know, they cannot quit this fight! They live it day in and day out and their families do as well. So when you are riding either in the brightness & heat of day or the darkness & cold of night & thoughts of taking a break enter your mind, remember that our Warriors cannot quit. The other thing that had a significant impact on me was that as I was fading quickly pedaling into a strong headwind with about 20 miles to go and felt like I was going to die on Hwy 25, two of my fellow riders came to my aid. They did this by coming off of their impressive pace and took turns to protect me from the headwind so I could finish. This spoke to me on so many levels. First, I was thrilled that I finished & achieved the goal. Second, I was so grateful that my crew was looking out for me and supported me. Without them, there was no way I could have finished the ride on my own. This to me draws a strong parallel to how friends, family & the P3C3 group among others support Cancer Warriors in any number of ways, whether it be with a meal, a ride, someone to talk to, or contributing to the Challenge to Conquer Cancer. Your actions speak very clearly to all of those whose lives are affected by cancer.
Know that each of you who are embarking on this journey are doing something great. You are inspiring all kinds of people in many different ways. You are inspiring some of us to be better cyclists. Making others more aware of the cause that unites the P3C3 group. And most importantly raising money for research so we can beat cancer and inspiring Cancer Warriors everywhere to give it all that they have. As you prepare to start the journey in a few days, know that I wish I was riding with you. It is an honor to know & ride with each and everyone of you. RideStrong!

Mike the webdude here: We’re supposed to be able to see where the guys are in real-time (at least every 10 minutes anyway) but we have to reset the tracking device successfully every 24 hours and we’re still figuring that part out. The last point tracked was from 7:30ish this morning, now they are surely in Florida heading towards Pensacola. They’ll be trying to reset the tracker on their next break (Toby knows how to do it, he’s in the saddle right now!) Sorry Everyone!

They were in Geneva AL not far from crossing into Florida as of 12:20 PM Monday. Team 3 is in the saddle.

Once we get the GPS device reset I’ll let you know – then you can click here to see where they are.

The Greenville Memorial Hopsital parking lot was buzzing with riders in their garb, support crews hustling and bustling to get every last detail ready for the road, family members and friends snapping pictures like a red carpet event. Channel 4 WYFF had the cameras rolling – maybe you can catch it on the news (not sure when it might air so watch channel 4 all day every day ;-) )

I must say I’m proud to be associated with this group. There is A LOT of hard work that goes into making something like this happen. Thanks to everyone on the team, especially Ron and Jennifer Jerina, Kevin and Sally Dunn, and everyone else that put in their time and efforts to make this event happen.

If anyone would like to send our riders or support crew a message, I will be posting messages on the Messages To The Team page. Email me your message and I’ll post it for them to see when they log on every day. I’m sure it’ll help lift them up on their journey.

The raffle drawing for the Lightspeed Sienna bicycle took place this morning at the Greenville Memorial Hospital minutes before the team hit the road to Austin. The lucky winner is… (drumroll)
