saw lance’s tweet today so followed thru.
seems like you guys enjoy a challenge!

12 years in contact with lance as i ride the routes of “giro d’italia, vuelta & tour de france means that i am familiar with the major players!

at athens2004 olympic i met athletes funded by “livestrong” so i know the great work done by those associated with “livestrong”.

since that time i have been trying to find a way to get more “paralympians to ride the routes of these “cycle tours”.many people take the easy route and travel with tour companies but the “physically challenged do not get there whether thru discrimination or lack of assistance it is not for me to say.
lance is seen greeting me at his monaco hotel at the start of the tour last year but what you did not see was the meeting with prince albert or pres. sarkozy during the tour.

MY CHALLENGE TO YOUR TEAM take disabled to the tour of california have them ride the route as a relay team each day thru start to finish! you will give the team huge publicity for your cause,assist the paralympic movement some of whom are disabled by cancer and also provide a venue for “returning disabled us troops ” to tacke the challenge some of them are looking for as they rebuild their lives!

ARE YOU GUYS UP TO THE CHALLENGE!!!

My friend met one of you (not sure whom) on the course at the LiveStrong Challenge and shared your story with me upon our finish. I am inspired, brought to tears, and uplifted by your story and your movement. I lost my childhood best friend to brain cancer in June of this year. I never truly understood how cancer affected so many until the day she was diagnosed. Your motivation, fund raising, and heart felt story will keep me riding for those that fight this battle. You share the experience of your mother through breast cancer and colon cancer, your mother-in-law through pancreatic cancer, your husband through prostate cancer, your cousin through breast cancer who passed away 6 weeks ago ,your sister through breast cancer earlier this year, and your young daughter through breast cancer for the second time. Hello Riders! It is Friday morning and I am thinking about each of you as you embark on yet a few more days of activities (running – my favorite) and your final ride. I know some of you and some of you I only know from your posts. As I had my quiet time with God this morning a song weighed heavy on my heart as I thought about the ugly word Cancer and how it took my mother in law away from my me and my family in late June in a matter of THREE short weeks. Unbelievable! So many things left unsaid and undone. But our God is a mighty God and as you cross your finish lines over the next two days turn your ears to heaven and hear the angels sing — The sound of salvation! Oh, Praise Him, He is Holy!

We lost a family member to cancer Tuesday. Although he was 92 and had lived a long, prosperous life–it was the dreaded disease that kept growing inside of him to make for some very long, hard days at the end. THANK YOU (and Renee!) for being support this year and for acknowledging how HARD a job that is! Going to Austin as support last year totally BROKE me! That last night, driving at 2:30 in the morning, so tired I was in tears and fearful I would get us all killed, I had to beg someone to drive for me – the first time of the trip. I would gladly have changed places with any rider and ridden for 7 hrs each shift! Not to downplay how hard it is to ride day after day, but that puts into perspective how hard it is to support.

I hope to be able to make the trip next year – most definitely as a rider
I hope you and Renee are catching up on your sleep and getting your selves back to normal – have fun in Austin – wish i was there!

To all the teams, was so great to hear that you all made it safely to Austin. That is a feat in itself. Your angels were there beside you protecting you and keeping you all safe. Praise the Lord! Cancer does suck. Especially when you watch a loved one die from it even though they fight as hard as they can. One day there will be a cure and all those who rode, donated or participated in some way will have had a part in it. We are to take each day as it comes and be glad in it. Love to Dawn & Jeni.

I may not speak for everyone here on the east coast, but once again I spent the week anxiously loggin on to check posts, current position, and weather. I teared up a few times, and laughed just as much. Once again I am disappointed that my “show” is over – you guys MADE IT!!!!

Can’t wait for you all to get back in town so I can show some love in person.

We never know what we are capable of until we are are moved outside of our comfort zone. Some never leave that comfort zone, some are forced outside of it by things beyond their control, and some voluntarily put themselves out there to help their fellowman, not just for those they know,but for those they will never meet. These special people are “transformed” (Tedd) and they transform other lives in the process.

That was lovely and very spot-on.

At first I was jealous that y’all were going on this trip without me. I am not typically a jealous person, and I didn’t quite know what to do with that. So I watched and read and thought, and I realized that though being on the ride itself was surely a gift and a precious thing, watching it from this end has been great too. When I was doing the ride it seemed surreal; reading about all ya’ll’s adventures and emotions has made the experience — even last year’s — more real and, in a way, just as special.

I don’t think all of you will ever realize what a difference all this has made in so many lives, not just the obvious ones in the cancer survivors and warriors, but in simple observers like me.

wow!! this so sums up everything this week!! I am volunteering with the ACS with the Reach to Recovery program. Being a breast cancer survivor I KNOW how important having someone to talk to that has been where I was….so I am giving back!! I pray that I can be a glimmer of hope to someone like the CAA and my ‘girls’ have been for me. Chasse and Laurens will always hold that special place in my heart for their devotion to this ride. Praying next year I can be there with ya’ll in the support van….looking forward to more updates!! SCOTTSTRONG!

Milt is a good guy…he never lacks for enthusiam! Glad he’s having a blast….he loves to be a part of something… For those who don’t know me…I am a BC survivor of 5 yrs. recently released by my oncologist (Dr. Gluck). There are success stories!! I’m friends with Milt, Chasse, Laurens and Scott. I’m so happy that Scott can be a part of this cause…he was a graceful caring inspiration to countless people. I will remember him always. I have had a day of reading all the blogs as I do everyday, (every hour I think) and I just thank GOD HE is watching out for you guys and gals! I thank Him because He put your determination in fighting against cancer! YES cancer sucks! but it’s because of people like YOU that we can get through it….THANKS!!

Still amazed…Your positive words (even through struggles) and inspiring stories are still amazing me! Thank you all for what you’re doing!! When I told a friend today what you all were doing, he said he would ride for the cause next year too! Hid dad died of cancer. I wanted to send a note to give you all one more person to ride for and ask you all to lift up in prayer as you’re riding…My friend Bobby’s dad. God IS with you…and so are a lot of other people back home lifting y’all in prayer! Trying to understand is an impossible task. I’ve struggled the last several years with the loss of life to cancer and have come to realize that sometimes there just aren’t any answers. I’m reminded of Steven Curtis Chapman’s song lyric that says “I can only see a portion of the picture He is painting”. God paints with a broad brush and we see just one streak.

Nikki, When I talked to Robin the first night she told me about your accident. Was bummed to hear about it and never have felt more helpless in my life. Call in the middle of the night, cold weather, and to find out one of my friends fell on their bike earlier. As I have mentioned to a few people already, thank you for what you are doing in this challenge…personally, it means alot to me and my family that you were willing to put in the training, time, effort, and commitment that it takes to conquer this ride. JD, thanks for the update! the whole P3C3 group just rocks! Scott was an amazing guy who endured so much pain in the short amount of time he had cancer. Nikki – keep putting the ride into perspective – the hard work has already been done (the fundraising and preparation) this is the celebration -the part you’ve been waiting for – but also make sure your team is “with you” Your team should only go as fast as the slowest rider – if that’s you, then so be it – it’s not about the pace or making the transition point – it’s about riding 6 hrs (if you can) with your team, as a team, and as you point out – remembering those , both known and unknown, who you are riding for.

Keep moving forward – hope your shoulder feels better each day – this is just a blip on the radar – stay focused and Ridestrong!

I woke up at 3:00 and instantly thought of you all in the bitter cold. The coldest I have ever experienced was 9 degrees skiing near Lake Winapasaki (sp!). And skiers are equiped with the right gear for the cold!! I can’t imagine!! You mention Scott and I gasp and cry…what a grace moment to feel Scott’s power. So glad I saw the start of the adventure!! Try to keep your spirit, warmth, strength and purpose.

To all riders and support…

Sorry it has taken so long for me to write a comment, but I wanted to make sure the words were correct and my thoughts were in line. Think about it…how do you even begin to inspire those that are already inspired? Reading your posts each an everyday and watching the live tracking really shows your friends and family the magnitude of what you have taken on and what you will ultimately accomplish. I find myself not sleeping at night one bit…I am constantly watching your progress and can’t seem to get past the elements of which you are facing during your trip. A lot of you have become my friends and I think of you often during this trip. You have a lot of support back home and what you are doing is being preached to new people each day…I am writing the website on the back of my SUV with a message so more of Greenville can see what you are doing and more will be aware when it comes around next year. By the time I post this, TEAM YELLOW will be riding until midnight. Support each other, watch over one another, and be safe. And to my wife Robin, no need to worry about things at the house…I walked the children and cooked the dog some dinner…no worries. Good Bye for now my friends. I look forward to your blogs. It was about 10:30 (Oct 19, 2009) when the TEAM made their way through Spencer Tennessee! No it was not for GAS or for Booze, they actually stopped by the Burritt Memorial Library to get ready for the next leg of the journey.

As my office is just across the street and the library director knows of my own battle against cancer and the stand I, as a survivor, take against that dreaded “C” word!

After meeting the team and sharing a few hugs for the work they are doing to raise awareness and funds in the battle against all cancers, I decided to stay in touch and keep our community of Relay Volunteers abreast of the progress.

In Tennessee we are working to change the mindset from PREVENTION not Treatment! And how does one prevent disease? Glad you asked!

1. Eating GOOD / healthy / organic / non processed foods

2. Exercise. Our bodies are not made for long hours of sitting behind a desk or standing in place! It requires movement and challenges.

3. Yoga – Meditation – Prayer. Yup, giving yourself a quiet moment can be just what it needs to heal.

4. CITY WATER :: ummm how to say this… bad! Spring water, or purified water is best for the body. Chlorine & floride and all the other chemicals are NOT good for the body.

5. BUY Local :: That way you know what goes in / on your food supply.

6. Avoid chemicals on the body when possible. Do some research with perfumes, deodorants, hair care products, cleaners…

The important thing is to start your own list.

Enjoy the rest of your day as the sun warms and the clouds stay dry! God bless you each for your time & dedication.

Seeing you guys roll out this afternoon was overwhelming and amazing. We’ve barely known Bo and Nikki a year, but right away we realized how proud we are to be able to call them our friends, as they set such an amazing example as fellow humans and are so wholeheartedly strong and solid for everyone they know. Barry Burden brought this ride to our attention several weeks ago. We interviewed him then and last Friday on WSSL 100’s Ellis and Bradley Show. We were proud to make a contribution and will post your website on the WSSL FM Facebook page.

I spent yesterday morning with my two little grandsons. Johnathan and Rudy. I’ve been blessed with two great sons..and now these two monkeys.

Ruth Wiley Ellis never got a chance to hold her grandchildren. Cancer got in the way. I’m 53 now, the same age as mom when it took her life. That was 30 years ago.

If the research and awareness of breast cancer detection had been available to her in 1979, I’m quite sure that her life could have been spared. This morning, as I wish the riders the very best, I’m listening to a song by Diamond Rio called “One More Day”.

Ride strong for the survivors. Push harder for those fighting the fight. Know that the spirit of those who lost, and those who love them are with you too.

Rob: Beautifully said. You said it all. At 70 years of age, I too, have had the same experiences with this wonderful group of men and women, particularly when we did our night ride through Ware-Shoals a couple of weeks ago. . Almost everyone in C-3 could be my son or daughter. I thank God that thus far I have been spared from this dreaded disease but I ride in honor of and in memory of my many relatives, classmates, friends and neighbors who have been afflicted by cancer. I particularly ride to honor fellow C3 team members who have and continue to battle this disease. It is a personal honor and privilege for me to know them. There are no words to sufficiently express my gratitude for their support and fellowship. We are truly a family and it is bittersweet that cancer brought us together. Always remember, “There are wooden ships and steel ships and other ships that sail the sea, but the best ships are friendships and they will always be”.

Thank you for your well wishes and we’ll be thinking of you as we pedal to Austin, TX. One more thing, Rob, keep in mind that “Life is not about waiting for the storm to pass. It is about learning to dance in the rain.

as I sit here this morning I am remembering last year’s ride. I was in Survivor School with Chasse and Laurens and I read the updates daily. I listened to Ron on HisRadio everyday. I am looking forward to keeping up with the ride again this year. I am praying now for safe travels and lots of memories to be made. Most of all I am praying that the monies raised will bring about a CURE for cancer. Having gone through breast cancer I know the trials and hardships of treatments. But I also know GOD IS BIGGER THAN ANY DISEASE!! Thanks for all you are doing to promote awareness and raise money. May God bless you ALL!!

First, I would like to thank my friends, Nikki and Bo Zimmerman for their taking up my battle as one that you are riding for. Though I’ve rarely been in the Palmetto State and met Nikki only once during our short careers at IBM, she has proven to be a devoted, utterly unshakable source of strenght for me as I start my own battle with bladder/prostate cancer. I’m due for my second chemo treatment this week and am looking forward to leading another attack on this insidious disease.

My sincere thanks and my prayers are with you all as you make final preparations for this magnificant event. My donation check is in the mail, as that’s all I’m able to do this year. Maybe next year, I’ll be able to carry a few legs for the Palmetto Pelaton Project.

I can’t believe that in only five (5) days we’ll be off on the second annual Challenge to Conquer Cancer Bicycle Relay to Austin Texas.

As the senior citizen ambassador of the riders (for those I haven’t told…I’m 70) I dedicated this past year to getting in both mental and physical condition to be a rider. Last year I volunteered as a support driver and did the Ride for the Roses in Austin. The entire week-long experience was truly one of the most inspirational experiences I’ve had since our children were born.

Although I’m not the fastest or strongest rider (most could be my sons or daughters) I’m inspired by the passion, dedication and enthusiasm consistently demonstrated by the entire team.

We’re are all riding for individual reasons and for the same reason………..to honor and memorialize relatives and friends and further develop an awareness of this dreaded disease and in the words of the late Jimmy Valvano, “Never Give up”.

Last year, when we arrived in Austin, I met Rob Dempsey who, with the help of Jeni Schumacher achieved a physical condition and weight loss that was incredible. At that time I was 69 years old and weighed close to 280 pounds. I mentioned to Jeni that if she could do what she did for Rob, she could sure help me. I was determined to make the effort and condition myself to be an integral part of this year’s C3 riders’ team. With Jeni’s counsel, as a “Y” employee, and her encouragement, I’ve been participating in a physical fitness program, including three spinner classes a week, since last November. I’ve lost 45 pounds and have significantly increased my cycling efficiency.

I’m repeatedly asked by our friends, why at 70 I choose to do this. I simply respond, “I can because there but for the grace of God go I and to honor and memorialze my many relatives and friends whose pain and suffering gives me the inspiration to make the effort.”

It’s my honor and priviledge to be able to participate with this dedicated group of individuals in this week long event.

I extend a word of personal gratitude to Ron & Jennifer Jerina for their tireless efforts in making this event a reality and of course to my “personal inspiration”, Jeni Schumacher.

Thank you all for allowing me to participate.

I’m confident that God will watch over us and ensure us of a safe and trouble-free week. GODSPEED

I’m already emotional about this year’s ride. I’m remembering my friend Robert Paton who gained a new body free of cancer on July 2nd. Your efforts mean so much to so many but I know it’s your own personal mission for your own reasons that push you to take the challenge. Great job on your ride to Austin, it sounded amazing and tough as well. I have a favor to ask, my name is Scott Roark and I am in the process of planning a similar ride to from Greenville to Gainesville with the Alzheimer’s Association here in Greenville. My favor is that I would love to pick your brain and anybody else’s that did the ride for info./advice about doing such a ride. Our ride is slated for the summer of ‘09 so we have some time but never enough.

i applaud you in this effort! great job to you and all P3C3 participants. i have truly enjoyed reading about everyone’s adventure in supporting this great cause…especially yours! life is short – i had much time to think aboout that during my two weeks in the hospital. since then my life has changed much. but thanks to you, i still have my life, which has lead me to recently joining a women’s cycling team. thanks for the inspiration!

My brother, you and all the folks from P3C3 are absolute heros, champions, conquerors, winners…the list goes on and on…just like Rene’. The inspiration y’all have offered is nearly impossible to contain! I know many people have been touched and influenced by what y’all have done and will continue to support the efforts…perhaps even get involved! Yet, there are many still unaware or in denial of the effects of cancer…but alas, they too, without question, will be effected in some way at some point in the future…and hopefully through efforts like yours, they’ll be able to see the benefits of successful research…A CURE!

wow, i have really enjoyed reading all of the riders entries, it is still amazing to me the endurance you guys have and the dedication to your cause is tremendous and greatly admired.
Ron, I have found myself re-reading your blog because i thought my eyes were playing tricks on me when i saw the Wal-_ _ _ _ word. I can only imagine how grunmpy you were as you are starving in the office by 9:00 am, after having breakfast.

You guys are incredible!! I was watching you on the “Spot” all evening and it looked like smooth sailing all the way!! This just proves looks are deceiving. Hey, Team. You guys are incredible. I have just read a CaringBridge update from some friends of ours who’s 3 yr old is about to have his one year anniversary since blood cord transplant. He spent lots of time at GHS with the Pediatric Oncology Docs. Reading of his progress just brings everything you are doing FULL CIRCLE. This is why you are dodging craters and looking for food in the middle of the night…so those who suffer from cancer, can Keep up the Fight, and win!! Thanks for all you are doing! Keep up the good work. You are all in my prayers.
